Sweetwater Boys Basketball

Daniel Price is the new boys basketball coach at Sweetwater. Although he says the Mustangs are having to learn a new system, Price predicts his team will be better this season.
“We have some guys with experience that will make us go this year,” Price maintained.
The Mustangs return six lettermen and three starters from last year’s squad that was 12-17 overall and 6-6 in district.
The top two returning scorers for Sweetwater are 5’10” senior guard Darwin Blueford and 5’10” junior guard Mason Blueford.
“Darwin was the primary point guard last year,” Price added. “Mason led us in scoring a year ago. He will factor in as a leader on the team.”
The Mustangs will also rely on 6’4” senior forward Sutton Templeton, who was the team’s top rebounder.
“Sutton played multiple spots last year,” Price said. “He has the ability to create mismatches on the outside.”
Other returning players include 5’7” senior guard Braedyn Knox, 6’0” senior forward Andrew Tames, 5’7” junior guard Cason Fields, 6’2” junior forward Ke’Ondra Williams, 5’7” senior guard Nik Avila and 5’9” senior guard Kannon Palafox.
“Knox was our sixth man,” Price continued. “He will provide a lift for our team this year.”
Sweetwater is in District 5-3A with Merkel, Clyde, Jim Ned, Grape Creek, San Angelo TLCA and Wall.
Sweetwater Girls Basketball

Sweetwater girls basketball coach Chris Jost said the Lady Mustangs will be younger this season, but they do return their top two scorers. Sweetwater posted a 29-7 record a year ago and went 8-4 in district, losing a two-point heartbreaker to Comfort in the bi-district round of the Class 3A Division I playoffs.
The Lady Mustangs’ two leading scorers are 5’10” senior guard Mallory Gibson and 5’5” junior guard Kallie Scherwitz. Both players were first-team all-district.
Gibson averaged 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and two assists per game last year and has now scored 1,000 career points. Jost called Gibson an “efficient scorer.”
Scherwitz led the team in scoring with 14.2 points and 3.5 steals per game last season. She sank 83 3-pointers during her sophomore campaign. “Kallie is an explosive scorer,” Jost added.
Sweetwater will be in District 5-3A with Clyde, Merkel, Grape Creek, San Angelo TLCA, Jim Ned and Wall.
