Stamford Boys Basketball

Mark Young takes over as the new boys basketball coach at Stamford. He inherits a team that returns six lettermen and two starters from last year’s squad that was 20-6 overall and 9-3 as the district runner-up. The Bulldogs lost in the bi-district round of the Class 2A Division II playoffs.
Young is optimistic about Stamford’s chances.
“We will be more experienced,” Young said, “with better court awareness, better court speed and more aggressive defenders and rebounders.”
Leading the way for the Bulldogs is 6’2” senior point guard Levi Vahlenkamp, who is the team leader in scoring and assists.
“Levi is versatile and can score from anywhere on the court,” Young stated. “He is also a great defensive player.”
Also returning for Stamford is 6’0” junior guard/forward Slayden Young and 6’4” junior post Brennan Armstrong.
“Slayden is very quick with the ball and explosive to the basket,” Young added. “He is a very good defensive player and rebounder. Brennan is very explosive and can get to the rim and find a way to score. He is good on defense, too.”
Young is the Bulldogs’ top returning rebounder.
Stamford plays in an eight-team district this year. District 10-2A includes Hawley, Haskell, Hamlin, Albany, Abilene TLCA, Anson and Munday.
Stamford Girls Basketball

Stamford girls basketball coach B.J. Hollis said his Lady Bulldogs will be “way more experienced” this season, noting his squad is senior-laden. Stamford returns eight lettermen and all five starters from last year’s team that was 12-20 overall and 3-9 in district.
Amber Miramontes, a senior guard, led the Lady Bulldogs in points, rebounds and charges drawn last year, according to Hollis. Miramontes averaged eight points and five rebounds per game.
Senior guard Kenzie Salazar averaged three assists per game.
Hollis said junior forward Christina Weathersbee “will add much needed height and athleticism to a senior-heavy team.”
Senior guard Krailyn Becker was second on the team in points, rebounds and 3-pointers made. Sophomore forward Hadley Gould started a few games as a freshman.
“Hadley played a lot of valuable minutes in district,” Hollis said. “I am looking forward to seeing her take the next step.”
Stamford will be in the eight-team District 10-2A with Hamlin, Anson, Haskell, Hawley, Albany, Munday and Abilene TLCA.
