Matt Tarbutton takes over as the new head football coach at Roby. He formerly served as the head coach at San Jacinto Christian Academy in Amarillo.
Tarbutton inherits a squad that returns four starters on both offense and defense. The Lions were 5-5 overall and 1-2 in District 7-1A Division I (six-man) a year ago.
“We will be better as team even though we graduated a really good player in (Kaige) Covington,” he stated.
Leading the way for the Lions is RB/LB Gunner Helm, who had 53 carries for 419 yards and six touchdowns last season and led the team with 81 tackles, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
QB/RB/LB Josh Adames is expected to do most of the passing for Roby. WR Ethan Hernandez (9-152, 1 TD receiving) is the Lions’ top returning receiver.
Other key returnees for Roby include TE/DL Eric Ragan and RB/WR/DB Dylan Lujan.
This is just Roby’s third season of playing six-man football and just its second in a University Interscholastic League district.
“This year’s team is more mature and experienced,” Tarbutton said. “They have learned the game more, and we have more depth. The big question is with a new coach and new scheme, how fast can they pick it up?”
Tarbutton, who said Roby will be multiple on offense and play a 4-2 or 3-3 on defense, believes the Lions can challenge favorite Ira for the district title.
