The Breckenridge boys basketball team was 11-22 overall and 3-9 in District 7-3A a year ago. But the Buckaroos return seven lettermen and four starters from last season’s squad. And they are now in a newly configured District 8-3A.
“We will have a lot of seniors and will be part of another tough district in 8-3A,” said third-year Breckenridge coach Brent Lucas. “Our district is now, and it has a lot of solid basketball programs within it. We are strong and competitive as a team. The guys play with a lot of energy.”
District 8-3A includes Breckenridge along with Brock, Comanche, Dublin, Early, Eastland, Millsap and Peaster.
Jerry Lawson, a 6’3” senior forward, is the Buckaroos’ leader in scoring and rebounding. He averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game last year.
“Jerry can score from anywhere on the floor,” Lucas said. “He does a good job of protecting he rim for us.”
Breckenridge’s senior-laden roster includes 5’11” guard Anson Rodgers, 5’11’ guard Zeke Castillo, 5’11” guard Sean Cooksey. 5’11” forward Isaiah Lehr ad 5’10” guard Lane Tinkle.
“Anson is a solid defender that always seems to end up with the ball,” Lucas added. “He ignites the rest of the team defensively.”
Alexis Franco, a 6’0” junior guard is the team’s ball handler and led the Bucks in assists per game last year.
Also providing depth for Breckenridge are 6’0” junior guard Cameron Escalon, 6’0” sophomore guard Ryan Mendoza and 6’1” junior guard Karter Smalley.
