Eagles Football

Abilene High head football coach Mike Fullen said his Eagles will be “younger” this year. But one spot in which they do have experience is at quarterback.

Senior QB Tristan Beal is back after splitting time at quarterback a year ago. Beal threw for 1,481 yards and 15 touchdowns with just two interceptions last season.

The Eagles return 31 lettermen but just five starters on both offense and defense from a team that finished 9-3 overall and swept to the District 2-5A Division I title with a 6-0 record. Abilene High lost to eventual state quarterfinalist Denton Ryan in the area round of the playoffs last year.

Senior WR John Rangel will be Beal’s favorite target He had 490 receiving yards and scored six touchdowns in 2025.

Skyler Falmoa, a 210-pound senior LB, will anchor the Eagles’ defense. He recorded 75 tackles a year ago. Senior DB Charlie Meeks nabbed four interceptions last season, while senior QB/LB Levon Koonce had three sacks.

Other returning players for Abilene High are senior RB/LB Symanni Strahan (80 yards, 3 TDs rushing), 6’3”, 240-pound junior DL Demarcus Reid, junior LB Jud Williamson, sophomore RB/DL Infinity Carroll, junior WR Aaron Brown and 255-pound senior OL Efrain Hernandez..

Abilene High will be in a slightly refigured District 2-5A Division I this fall with Amarillo High, Amarillo Caprock Amarillo Tascosa, Frenship Memorial, Lubbock High, Lubbock Monterey and Woolforth Frenship.

Abilene High returns four starters this fall as Emily Gravitt begins her second season as the Lady Eagles’ volleyball coach. AHS was 18-17 overall last year and 4-4 in district, finishing as the district runner-up and losing to Amarillo Tascosa in the bi-district round of the Class 5A Division I playoffs.

“We will be younger this year, but we will be hungry for a chance to compete,” said Gravitt, noting Abilene High lost seven lettermen to graduation from last year’s squad. She listed the Lady Eagles’ “excitement to compete” as her team’s strength.

Miela Brown, a 5’9” senior outside hitter, will lead the Lady Eagles’ offensive attack. She had 205 kills last season.

Also returning for Abilene High are 5’4” senior defensive specialist Kate Breckenridge and 5’9” senior setter Zia Gravitt. Breckenridge recorded 329 digs a year ago, while Gravitt had 889 assists.

There is no change in Abilene High’s district this season. The Lady Eagles will play in the five-team District 4-5A, along with cross-town rivals Abilene High and Abilene Wylie, as well as Wichita Falls Legacy and Wichita Falls Memorial.

Abilene High and Cooper will host the annual Bev Ball tournament again this year on Aug. 14-15.
