The Sweetwater volleyball team returns five starters from last year’s team that finished 17-8 overall and 8-2 as the runner-up in District 3-4A. The Lady Mustangs hope to improve on last year’s effort when they were swept in three straight by Dumas in their bi-district match.
Coach Mitzi Bell, in her third season at Sweetwater, said her team’s strength is its defense, and she expects to have stronger hitters this fall. Bell, however, said the Lady Mustangs did graduate several key players including its setters.
Sweetwater will be led by seniors Jazzanne Potts and Paris Houston. Bell described both players as “powerful outside hitters.” Potts led the team in kills last season.
Addison Page, a 5-10 senior, also returns as the Lady Mustangs’ middle blocker, giving Sweetwater an experienced front line.
Bell expects that front line to be the difference as Sweetwater contends for one of the top two spots out of the district this season. The Lady Mustangs were runner-up behind Snyder in the Districts 3-4A standings last year.
