First-year Roby girls basketball coach Michael Humphrey is bringing an extra weapon with him to his new job. His daughter 5’7” senior guard Callie Humphrey averaged 15.4 points per game last year and was the District 4-2A MVP at Ralls. She was also a Texas Girls Coaches Association all-state selection the last two years.
Humphrey joins a team that returns two starters and five lettermen. The Lady Lions were 15-11 overall and 10-2 in District 15-1A as the runner-up to Aspermont. Roby won its first-round playoff game but lost to West in area round of the Class 1A playoffs.
“We are working hard and learning every day,” coach Humphrey said. “Our kids are young and hungry, eager to learn and work to get better. But they still need more experience to gel as a team.”
Chasity Benson, a 5’2” sophomore point guard, and 5’11” junior post Mackenzie Castillo each earned all-district honors a year ago. Benson averaged 1.7 assists per game, while Castillo grabbed a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game.
Other returning players expected to play key roles for the Lady Lions include 5’7” junior guard Hope Garmer, 5’8” junior forward Laney Stewart and 5’6” sophomore guard Haylee Garmer.
Humphrey is hoping for contributions from a trio of freshmen – 5’2” Lilly Benson, 5’7” forward Joselyn Williams and 5’7” guard Ivy Espinoza.
“Lilly has great potential,” Humphrey said. “She is quick, fast. Joselyn is a hard worker with lots of grit.”
