New Hamlin girl basketball coach T.J. Fly said the Lady Pipers will be “older and very athletic” this season, relying on their speed and quickness to overcome a lack of height. Hamlin returns eight lettermen and three starters from last year’s team that finished 1-11 in powerful District 10-2A.
Samantha Gonzalez, a 5’6” senior guard, provides that athleticism for Hamlin.
“Samantha is our Energizer Bunny,” Fly said. “She will play hard all the time. This senior leader will bring much-needed athleticism to us.”
Gonzalez averaged 7.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game for Hamlin last season.
A pair of juniors –5’7” guard Cora Botos and 5’9” forward Bo Richardson – are also key returning players for the Lady Pipers.
“Cora has great length that will help us on the defensive side, as well as a developing shot that will aide in us spreading out other defenses,” Fly added. “Bo is an overall athlete that can battle down low or take it outside and shoot the ball. Her drive and effort will really help us this year.”
Hamlin plays in District 10-2A along with Stamford, Haskell, Hawley, Albany, Anson and Cisco.
