Diana Salinas admitted her Comanche girls basketball team will be very young this year.
“We have almost a new team as we graduated a few girls,” said Salinas, who was a standout during her own playing career in high school at Comanche and this year will be inducted into the Hardin-Simmons University Hall of Fame for her play for the Cowgirls. “We will be a very fast team this year, and that can help us defensively.”
One of those quick players is 5’6” senior guard Payson Hicks, who averaged eight rebounds and 11 rebounds per game last season.
“Payson is our fast guard on the court, and defensively she can pick up steals and be an aggressor on the court,” Salinas said.
The Maidens are counting on 6’0” junior post Riley Riordan to be force on the inside.
“Riley is one of our most athletic girls in our program,” Salinas said. “Although softball is her main sport, she brings an intensity and fire to our team. She spent this summer getting stronger and is ready to show that in the paint. She has finally grown into her body and knows how to use it to her advantage. It will be exciting to see what she can do this year.”
Jackie Keith, a 5’5” junior guard is “our steady player,” according to Salinas. Keith had two assists per game a year ago.
Comanche is in District 8-3A with Breckenridge, Brock, Dublin, Early, Eastland, Millsap and Peaster.
