As Baird tries to rebuild its girl’s basketball program, the Lady Bears will be counting on several underclassmen. But there is optimism because the numbers participating in the program have grown this year, according to coach Samuel Hamrick.
“We are very young in terms of upper-to-lower class ratio,” he said. “Compared to last year, this team is raw with the ability to grow into an elite program with proper guidance. We have a work ethic to strive to be better and to learn the game with plenty of grit.”
Hamrick will have two seniors on the team – forward Cassidy McLaughlin and guard Hailey Jones – to provide leadership for the team. Coach Hamrick also listed a pair of juniors in forward Autumn Pittman and center Skyler Thomas.
Everyone else that the Lady Bears will be counting on this season are freshmen or sophomores. That includes sophomore forward Hailiegh Coleman, freshman guard Katelyn Langford, sophomore center Brady Deel and sophomore forward Jayden Smith
Baird is hoping to contend for a playoff spot. Two teams out of District 13-1A – May and Eula – reached the quarterfinals of the Class 1A playoffs a year ago.
