Wylie Girls Basketball

December 13, 2021

The Abilene Wylie girls basketball team will count on its inside post game this season. The Lady Bulldogs return only one starter and five lettermen from last year’s team that finished 13-13 overall and 7-3 as the runner-up in District 4-5A.

Amy Powell, beginning her fourth season as the girls coach at Wylie, admitted this year’s team will be inexperienced compared to last year. The Lady Bulldogs must find replacements for their two leading scorers who graduated – Morgan Travis, who signed with Hardin-Simmons, and Emma Melton, who will run track at Sam Houston State.

“Young players will play a bigger role,” said Powell, who still believes Wylie will contend for a district title.

One of those young players is 6’2” sophomore post Indiah Maroney, who was the district co-defensive player of the year last season.

Maroney, along with her older sister, 5’10” senior forward Kenyah Maroney, and 5’10” junior Kaylan Adams give Wylie a strong inside game. Adams averaged 3.6 rebounds per game and was named second-team all-district.

Caroline Steadman, a 5’6” junior point guard, was a second-team all-district selection last year, too. She averaged five points and 2.3 assists per game a game.

Kyla Kelley, a 5’7” sophomore guard, is also expected to join Steadman in the backcourt, according to Powell

Regional quarterfinalist Amarillo Tascosa edged Wylie 72-69 in a Class 5A bi-district playoff game last year.
