Early girls basketball

November 23, 2021

New Early girls basketball coach Kristy Sweatman is happy to welcome the return of Dana Lykes and Taylor Summers to her team.

Lykes, a 5’8” senior forward was an all-district selection last season for the Lady Longhorns.

“She is athletic and quick,” Sweatma said of Lykes. “Dana is an inside presence for us that can get up and rebound and defend.”

Meanwhile, Summers, a 5’6” senior guard, is eager to get back on the court after having to sit out last year due to shoulder surgery.

“Taylor is a savvy point guard that has good ball-handling skills and a good shot,” Sweatman noted. “She also knows the game and will provide leadership for us.”

Carrigan Norris, a 5’7” post, will be important on the boards for Early.

“Carrigan plays with a lot of passion,” Sweatman added. “She is small for a post, but she is not afraid to be physical. We will look to her for leadership and rebounding as well.”

A pair of junior guards, 5’5” Madison Torrez and 5’5” Trinity Torrez, are “quick players who will be able to defend the perimeter,” according to Sweatman.

Caroline Welker, a 5’6” junior forward also brings varsity experience to the team.

“This year’s team is more experienced,” Sweatman stated. “Our strength will be our defense and competitiveness.”

Early expects to compete for one of the four playoff spots in the eight-team District 8-3A that includes defending district champion Peaster, Brock, Bangs, Comanche, Dublin, Eastland and Millsap.
