The Early boys basketball started three sophomores and a junior last year, so coach Eric Davis, beginning his second year as the Longhorns’ head coach, believes that the experience gained a year ago will pay benefits this season.
“Our toughness and knowledge of the game are our team’s strengths,” said Davis, “but we have to get better at shooting the 3-ball.”
Early was 10-14 last year with a 6-8 record in District 8-3A.
Vic Cooper, a 6’6” senior, led the Longhorns with 17 points and nine rebounds per game last year.
Four juniors will join Cooper in the starting lineup.
Jeremy Brown, a 5’10” point guard, will quarterback the Early offense, while 6’1” Jaxyn Price is the team’s defensive leader.
“Jeremy pushes the ball up the floor very well and has become a nice 3-point threat,” Davis said. “Jaxyn is a defensive general on the court. He is a really good defensive player.”
Brown averaged 2.8 assists per game last season. Brown and Price will be joined in the backcourt by 5-9” junior John-Stewart Gordon.
“John-Stewart is very competitive and an extremely hard worker,” Davis added.
The other starter will be 6’2” junior John Hill.
“John has become a very good finisher around the rim,” Davis continued. “He is also a good defender.”
