The Cisco girls basketball team posted a 20-9 record last year but was only 7-5 as the fourth-place team from tough District 10-2A. The Lady Loboes caught fire in the postseason, however, winning three straight games before falling to Muenster in the regional semifinals.
“This year’s team is almost the same team as last year, only a year older with more experience,” said Brent Kilpatrick, beginning his seventh season as the head coach Cisco.
That may be bad news for the rest of District 10-2A.
Cisco is led by 6’1” senior forward Sophia Hurtado, considered one of the top players in the Big Country. She averaged a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds per game last year and was named all-state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association as well as the district defensive most valuable player. Hurtado is also a two-team all-region selection by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
She will be joined in the starting lineup by 5’10’ junior guard Justice Fox, who was also TGCA all-state choice and a first-team all-district selection.
Sophomore point guard Braley Brunson, a 5’9” sophomore, was named the District 10-2A newcomer of the year. She averaged 4 assists per game last season for the Lady Loboes.
Kilpatrick said Cisco’s strength is its size and experience. That size should receive a boost from Hurtado’s younger sister Brooklyn Hurtado, a 6’4” sophomore.
