The Brownwood girls basketball team returns its top seven players from last year’s squad.
“This team will be more experienced and more motivated to compete on a high level,” said Heather Hohertz-Perez, who is in her 12th season as the head coach at Brownwood.
With that experience, the Lady Lions expect improvement on last year’s record which saw the team finish 9-15 overall and 2-7 in District 5-4A.
Tessa Goodwin, a 5’10’ senior, was a Class 4A all-state selection last season by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. She led Brownwood in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game a year ago.
Hohertz-Perez called 5’6” senior point guard Kynslee Walker the team’s “floor general.” She is also anticipating an expanded role for 5’4” junior guard Mady Pyle.
“Mady is a gym rat,” Hohertz-Perez said, “and we will need her outside shooting threat.”
The coach is counting on leadership, too, from a pair of seniors, 5’6” guard Alexa Arreola and 5’11” post Jaylen Savage.
“Alexa will be our leader on and off the court,” Hohertz-Perez stated. “Jaylen will be our emotional leader. She will step into the starting role.”
Jadie Sudderth, a 5’4” junior guard, is moving up from the junior varsity.
“Jadie will play a lot of roles,” Hohertz-Perez said, “and we look for her to run our offense and be a spark for us on the defensive end.”
Hohertz-Perez said the Lady Lions must “still find out what our identity will be.”
