Brenda Andress, a former standout basketball player at Abilene Christian University, takes over as the new girls basketball coach at Abilene High. She inherits a team that struggled to a 4-7 record overall and 2-10 mark in District 2-6A last yeare.
But she is hoping to bring a new attitude to the Lady Eagles.
“This program’s main focus is to work hard, practice and act like a champion, and get better every day,” Andress emphasized. “If we do these things consistently, we will be successful.”
She said “athleticism, energy and a willingness to work hard” is the team’s strength. Depth is her biggest concern.
Abilene High has three starters and four lettermen returning, including 5’7” senior guard Shaliyah Christian-Stevenson.
“Shaliyah brings experience to the team and steps up as a vocal leader,” Andress stated.
Alexis Dolton, a 5’10” junior forward, will give the Lady Eagles an inside presence.
“Alexis has stepped up as a great leader this year,” Andress added. “She brings a lot of focus to the team.”
Amyah Starks, a 5’8” sophomore guard, saw playing time as a freshman last year.
“Amyah is a gifted player who brings strength and athleticism,” Andress sad. “She will be a force on both ends of the court this season.”
Another sophomore, 5’4” Arianna Trevino, is expected to play a big role as a young point guard, according to Andress.
“Ari has worked hard over the summer to improve her skill set,” Andress noted.
