The key to Eastland’s volleyball season will be finding help on the back line.
“We lost a lot of our defensive specialists, including our libero,” Eastland coach Rachel Schuman stated, “but we are returning three strong hitters and our setter. They already have a chemistry built from last season. Our biggest weakness is inexperience at the varsity level, however. We have a lot of open spots that will be filled with girls that haven’t competed at the varsity level.”
The Lady Mavs bring back four starters from a team that finished 12-12 overall and 7-7 in District 8-3A. Eastland was swept by Holliday in bi-district.
Schuman said 6-foot senior middle blocker Kynnley Herrington (193 kills and a .108 hitting percentage) is “our go-to hitter of our offense.” Herrington will be joined on the front line by senior outside hitter Ella McLean and sophomore middle blocker Londyn Carroll, who started as a freshman last season.
“She is a great competitor and will be one to watch as a standout this coming season,” Schuman said of Carroll.
Another returning starter who shined as a freshman a year ago is sophomore setter Addy Cunningham, the team leader with 109 digs and 283 assists in 2020.
“As a freshman she really stepped in and competed well at that position,” said Schuman. “Addy is a double threat because she is an extremely good defensive specialist as well.”
Schuman added that “every team is different every year so our goal is to always try and win our district.”
