Bangs posted an impressive 9-2 record last year, going 4-1 as the runner-up to Ballinger in District 2-3A Division II. Unfortunately, the Dragons ran into eventual state champion Canadian in the area round of the playoffs, dropping a 56-13 decision to the state champs.
Coach Kyle Maxfield, who is in his fourth season at the helm in Bangs, returns only three starters on offense and two on defense, so this might have to be termed a rebuilding year. The Dragons have just eight returning lettermen.
WR/LB Damien Santillanes (20-200, 1 TD rushing and 50 tackles) will play a key role on both sides of the ball for Bangs.
“He has great quickness and good experience,” Maxfield said.
Junior RB/DB Guy Powell (29-152 rushing and 15-305, 4 TDs receiving) also brings speed and quickness to both the Bangs offense and defense. He had one interception last season.
The Dragons, who averaged 268 yards rushing per game a year ago, will have to find a new quarterback.
“The foundation of our program and our team speed will be the strengths of this year’s team,” Maxfield offered. “But overall, we will be very young and inexperienced.”
Warren Theriaque has the most experience of those returning on the offensive and defensive lines, according to Maxfield.
Braxton Melling is back as the Dragons’ kicker. He made 44 of 50 extra-point attempts last season.
